Closet Clean Out Tips

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you purge your wardrobe. Most of us hate this task, but it is a necessary one. If you can’t see it you won’t wear it!  I always like to start this process the beginning of each season.  That way it gets you excited about the upcoming season and allows you to also take out of your closet the pieces that you know won’t work for whatever weather you are coming into, but you still want to keep them.  I just buy some of those cubes that go under the bed and stick those items there until I need them again.

First, what you will need.  1 Box of Lawn & Leaf size trash bags, Rubbermaid Storage containers w/lids (I like the 18 gallon size) and several Tote Bags.  I love using the blue Ikea Storage Bags (as seen in my photo).  They hold a lot of weight and they are reusable.  You can get them on Amazon if you don’t have an Ikea in your town.

So, now that you have everything you need to tackle your clean out, here are the 5 steps that I do that work seamlessly every time.

Take It Out & Try It On

Ask yourself “does this fit and is it flattering?”

Create 5 piles:

  1. Keep – You love it, you wear it often and it is flattering & fits
  2. Sell – Doesn’t fit, you don’t wear it, and it’s not flattering
  3. Repair – Needs to be hemmed, button missing, etc.
  4. Donate – Not in style, gently used
  5. Trash – Stained, or damaged clothing

*Sell to places like Plato’s Closet  Style Encore or local consignment shops. Then take the money you make and use it to replenish your wardrobe with great essential pieces.

Fall Back Plan
Sometimes it is hard to part with clothes. Give yourself some grace. Find a storage container depending on the size and space you have to work with and store the clothes you are unsure about. If in 30 days you have not reached for the items you have stored, then it is safe to say you can then proceed to get rid of them!
Now Shop Your Closet
You want your wardrobe to look like a store an easy to shop store. I suggest hanging clothes in a color coordinating, fashion along with the sleeve length. If you are not able to hang everything (most of us cannot due to space) be sure to fold things like jeans and t-shirts. Use dressers or shelves in and outside of your closet.
